What Should I Expect?

ALSO’s OIS class is approximately a 14-16 hour course taken over 2 consecutive training days. Training days are scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a 45 minutes lunch break and several 10 minute breaks scheduled throughout the day.  Exact timing may vary based on class size, participation and chosen certification level.

  • Day 1: Primarily classroom-style instruction, discussion, and foundational learning.
  • Day 2: Classroom learning concludes, and attendees begin the physical skills portion of the training (if applicable).

This workshop is delivered in a classroom-style learning environment. Most of the training focuses on information shared through instruction, activities, and discussion. A portion of the class is dedicated to learning physical safety skills that may be used during crisis situations. This section requires in person attendance, physical movement, participation, and your full attention.

Attendance Requirement

Attendees must arrive on time and participate in both full training days to be eligible for completion. Please plan ahead for travel, parking, lunch, and any personal scheduling needs.

Accessibility and Physical Participation

If you have an injury or physical limitation that may affect your ability to move comfortably, please consider this before registering and consult with your supervisor if applicable. Inability to perform physical skill components of the course, if required for your workplace, may impact the level of certification attained. This class is taught and presented in verbal and written English. Interpretation services may be available with advanced notice to the coordinator. Requests for interpretation services must be submitted at least 3 weeks prior to the class and may require an additional fee.

If you need accommodations, including interpreting services or other supports, please contact us at least 3 weeks in advance for more information.

What Should I Wear?

Classroom temperatures may vary, so dressing in layers is recommended. Please wear clothing that allows you to move comfortably during the physical skills portion of the class (jean style pants and a t-shirt are good choices). Closed-toed shoes are required, athletic shoes are recommended. Crocs or similar open-backed footwear should not be worn, even in “sport mode.” Sandals are not appropriate for this class. High risk foot ware (high heels, sandals, flip flops) or clothing that cannot be safely used to complete the skills may result a restricted ability to certify or complete the physical skills portion of the class.
