About This OIS Class

Advocates for Life Skills and Opportunity (ALSO) offers a limited number of seats to external participants who need Oregon Intervention System (OIS) General Certification.

Why OIS?

OIS training is designed to help you support people in living meaningful, connected lives, even when challenging situations make social and community engagement more difficult. During the class, you will learn practical, person-centered strategies for preventing and responding to difficult situations in a safe and respectful way.

General OIS Certification

ALSO provides this OIS training for people who support adults experiencing intellectual or developmental disabilities. This training is not intended for those supporting individuals under the age of 18.

This class provides the General OIS Certificate, which includes selected hands-on interventions such as escapes, deflections, grab releases, and physical positioning. This certification does not include PPIs or safeguarding interventions.

Class Location

Training will be held at ALSO’s main office:

What Should I Expect?

ALSO’s OIS class takes place over two 8-hour training days, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with a one-hour lunch break.

  • Day 1: Primarily classroom-style instruction, discussion, and foundational learning.
  • Day 2: Classroom learning concludes, and attendees begin the physical skills portion of the training.

This workshop is delivered in a classroom-style learning environment. Most of the training focuses on information shared through instruction, activities, and discussion. A portion of the class is dedicated to learning physical safety skills that may be used during crisis situations. This section requires physical movement, participation, and your full attention.

Accessibility and Physical Participation

If you have an injury or physical limitation that may affect your ability to stoop, lift, or move comfortably, please consider this before registering and consult with your supervisor if applicable.

If you need accommodations, including interpreting services or other supports, please contact us in advance.

What Should I Wear?

Classroom temperatures may vary, so dressing in layers is recommended. Please wear clothing that allows you to move comfortably during the physical skills portion of the class. Closed-toed shoes are required. Crocs or similar open-backed footwear should not be worn, even in “sport mode.”
